Air Ambulance and Drones – Their Roles during Emergencies

Published:

An air ambulance is a fixed-wing aircraft that transports injured patients to hospitals or focused trauma centers. Air ambulances may be staffed by medical personnel, such as paramedics, nurses, and/or physicians. They are designed for patient transport to and from places that would not be reached by ground ambulances.

What Roles Do Drones Play?

A drone primarily transports blood or medication in an emergency, such as a disaster where traffic might be heavy. For example, if you needed to get to the hospital quickly because of an injury from a car accident, then a drone may be in a better position to get help faster. Of course, the operation of drones requires specialized on-ground handlers and requires specific digital infrastructure. While drones are usually fitted with cameras, they also make extensive use of global positioning systems.

The Cost – Drones Versus Air Ambulance Services

Drones are similar to air ambulances in many ways but are much cheaper to run and maintain. They can be stored more easily and cost-effectively which ultimately reflects on the charges that need to be borne by the patients. That said, it must be noted that there are several tasks that only an air ambulance can perform.

On the other hand, drones are faster and more flexible than ground ambulances, which often cannot access remote areas where a patient needs help quickly. Drones cannot carry more weight than air ambulance helicopters. That said, they also do not demand large landing areas like helicopters. Air ambulances and drones offer new ways to help injured people get to hospitals quickly. They are also more cost-effective than helicopters, which can be expensive to run and maintain. However, the efficiency of air ambulance helicopters cannot be doubted, especially when the distance to be covered is a lot. Also, drones need emergency experts on the ground whereas air ambulances can carry them along.
